Motor City Electric Co. worked with Barton Malow/Brinker Group to perform $15 million in electrical contracting services for the new Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Children’s Hospital of Michigan Critical Care Tower II. The project includes demolition, temporary construction, new construction, and renovation work.

The Process

After the planned demolition of the Holden Wing and the Ronald McDonald House, All contractors will temporarily relocate the existing Emergency Department and Medical Records group from the Holden Wing during construction. A new temporary main entrance will facilitate the main entry drive rework new lobby addition.

The project’s centerpiece is the construction of a new six-story, 185,000 square-foot Critical Care Tower and subsequent renovations of existing pre-/post operating, surgical support spaces, and the existing Emergency Department. Improvements to the hospital include a new Emergency Department, new imaging equipment, larger operating rooms, and advanced surgical equipment.

Furthermore, this project consists of the construction of 87 new private rooms, including 39 neonatal intensive care beds and 48 pediatric intensive care unit beds, with the hospital’s main entrance, lobby, departments, and all of the patient units to follow the patient units required reconfiguration from double-occupancy rooms into nearly 135 private rooms. Work began in 2015, with a projected completion date in 2017.
